For this first week’s blog I thought it would not only be appropriate but really powerful to talk about living in the light.
I remember listening to a homily about two years ago from a priest who
was talking about living in the light. He spoke with such vigor and such passion. He had a big smile on his face as he shouted and exclaimed to put away the sin of lust, pornography, greedand envy and to live in the light. What does that mean exactly? The “light” to me is the Holy
Spirit. Well, what is the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit simply put is the love of the Father and the Son combined. The Spirit consists of purity, selflessness and love while the flesh, as St. Paul writes, craves physicality. The true freedom of the light comes from our free will to reject sin
and its guilt. I always found the arguments of “if it feels good do it” to be very ironic. If we have that mentality we become slaves to the flesh, we become unable to break the bonds sin and guilt because we cannot control ourselves and give into sinful pleasures. God’s law is the total
opposite, we have the ability and the freedom to denounce and reject sin and to choose to live in love and light. Whereas sin is deceived as pleasure but only guilt lies in wait to torment our souls.
As the poet William Ernest Henley wrote in his poem Invictus,
“I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.”
We can be that master and captain of our souls because of the Holy Spirit that can lead us to live in the light which is love and freedom itself.
